Lamb Pairing

Planning for dinner this Sunday (or any Sunday):

You: "What wine goes great for a crowd eating lamb?" (or any meat)

Me:  "A good Bordeaux from the Medoc is a classical pairing with lamb....so, how about a 94 point, $60 Bordeaux from  Pauillac?" 

You: "In your dreams, Chris....I've got my mother-in-law coming over"

Me: "Then I have just what your looking for....meet  my pal, Roland La Garde"


If you follow world of Bordeaux, you know that 2005 has been hailed as a vintage DEEP in quality.  In lesser years, one must seek out the more prestigious Chateau's to find the best quality wines.  But when the weather conditions are perfect as they were in '05, you can find amazing pedigree in an everyday wine. 

• The 2005 Roland La Garde is in the "DRINK NOW" window.  Like Wine Spectator,  I think it's perfectly balanced.  What do I mean by balance?  It's not too tannic, not to acidic, not too fruity, etc.   No single element of the wine dominates and leaves your mouth feeling a certain way or unpleasant.   Instead there is perfect harmony -   a wine that you can easily enjoy more then a glass. 
   
• Split between Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, the La Garde is very dry, has a medium to full body mouth feel with plenty of red fruit fruit flavors, followed by moderate tannin and with a slight dose of the classic Bordeaux cigar box/cedar flavor.
  
  
• Let this baby open up for a while before you drink it!  Open it a couple hours early or use a decanter if available.  One of my favorite wine geek a.k.a. cork dork quotes is, "Friends don't let friends pop-and-pour!"

Gold Medal Winner

 Words that often describe a figure skater (when he/she isn't trying to land a triple-axel) :   graceful, elegant, artistic,  subtle, finesse, delicate yet powerful. 

Words that often describe this weeks E-Club special:  graceful, elegant, artistic  subtle,  finesse, delicate yet powerful. 

This week we are featuring a wine that reminds me of a figure skater.  This wine is nothing like a big, brutish Cabernet nor does it have the overwhelming power and extraction of a wine from Southern France.   Instead it's a wine that can be easily overlooked because of it's elegant and delicate nature.  If you put this wine up against an Aussie Shiraz or a Cali Cab, it would get pushed aside like a figure skater would in arm wrestling match against a football player.    As much as I like big, rich, football style wine I also like to watch figure skating and drink those kind of wines.  The Tempranillo grape when grown in upper Rioja and produced in the "Traditional Style" is a great example of a figure skating wine.   Another more familiar figure skating type wine might be Pinot Noir grown in the Burgundy region of France.

I could make a case for Rioja being the most historic and important region of  Spain like Napa Valley  is to California.   We see wines at all price points from Rioja, all of which are dominated by the Tempranillo grape.   Bodegas Montecillo is one of the oldest and most historic properties in Rioja.   They still make what many call, "Traditional Style."  What the heck does that mean?

Traditional Rioja is aged longer in oak barrels before it's released to us.   The longer aging gives the wine more subtle nuances in the aroma,  a silky mouthfeel  and smooth tannins.   These wines are made to be elegant and graceful.

Modern Rioja is just the opposite.  It's aged for less time, so it's going to have richer, more concentrated fruit flavors, fresher aromas, and is rounder in the mouth with firmer tannins.   These wines are intense from start to end.

The 2001 Gran Reserva is one of the Montecillo's highest level bottlings, and is of course, made in the "Traditional Style."  Gran Reserva wines are only made in the best vintages, and are aged the longest before release.  There is no need to put this wine in your cellar or basement.  The aging was done in Spain and this wine is ready for you to drink this weekend.    Instant gratification!  For full effect, I recommend watching figure skating while drinking it.

What does it taste like?  I just poured some in my glass. It smells of fresh cherries and dark fruits, but you can also smell the age on this wine which is great.  It reminds me of a well-aged Bordeaux.   There are some leather, and spice smells too.  In the mouth it's just as advertised,  soft, silky and delicate.   There is still lots of fruit and the tannins are smooth.   And you keep tasting this wine (the finish) well after you've swallowed.    It's an easy wine to drink more of then a single glass.   Food wine?  Yes.

A wine for Concord

2005 Walden Cotes du Roussillon Rouge

 

 

No this wine isn't from Concord, but from a winemaker in France who gets his inspiration from Thoreau.  A pamphlet about the wine includes lengthy quotes from Thoreau as well as atmospheric black and white photos of woodlands.  Being from Concord, we just couldn't resist giving this wine a try. 

From the Roussillon, Walden is very different from your typical California wine.   Very earthy, this organically produced blend of 40% Syrah and 30% each of Grenache and Carignan (50 to 90 year old vines) has a nose mostly of animal fur, with notions of violets and stone. A pleasant plumminess on the palate, with lots of dark fruit flavors that lead to a stony, mineral finish.  The wine doesn't see any oak aging at all, so you are left with the just fruit as nature intended.  Sound familar?

"The Walden Herve Bizeul 2005 Cotes du Roussillon displays aromas of kirsch, tart black raspberry, and a pungent smoked meat, roasted nut and saline side typical for these varieties in these terroirs. Bright and saline on the palate, it leads to a faintly warm and astringent but satisfyingly long finish with herbal and crushed stone notes adding interest."

Rose Wine

I hear so many comments from customers about Rose being low quality and "uncool."  I think this idea was caused by all the crappy blush wines that started getting popular in the 80's.  The dry roses are a perfect summer drink and are totally back in style. We like to keep a big selection in all different price points with a focus of the Provence region of France.

Stone Soup Dinner in Concord supports local farmers

West Concord Liquor Store is happy to be taking part by arranging local wine and beer to be served at the Stone Soup Dinner.  Tickets are available at our store for $35.

The Stone Soup Dinner, a folk tale which reveals the pleasures of creating and sharing a meal, inspired the Concord Agricultural Committee to enlist local farmers, retailers and citizens to bring their harvests, products and talents together for an evening of community fellowship.  The Agriculture Committee was formed three years ago with a mission which includes promoting the sale of locally grown crops and other farm products and educating Concord residents, and those from surrounding areas about agricultural issues.  With land becoming increasingly valuable, there is a greater threat to maintaining Concord's traditional agricultural landscape and events such as the Stone Soup dinner will remind residents of the importance of supporting Concord's diverse farming community. 

Friends of the Concord Agriculture committee invite you to join them in feasting on locally grown produce and meats at their second Stone Soup Dinner to be held at the Gardens at Buttrick Mansion on Saturday, September 26, 2009 from 4 to 7 p.m. 

2000 L de la Louviere Bordeaux

Another little gem I  wanted to pass along is the 2000 L de la Louviere.  With all the hype from the 2005 Bordeaux vintage, the 2000 vintage became overlooked.  Many if not all of the professional critics consider it too early to drink the 2005's now. However, many wines from the 2000 vintage (which was viewed as the the next best since 1990) are just entering their "drink now" window.

Wine Spectator gave this wine 90 Points. Here is the review from them: Dark colored, with a fantastically deep and rich nose of crushed currants and berries, with hints of new wood. Full-bodied, with super, well-integrated tannins and a long, caressing finish. Very well-crafted. Almost too good for a second wine. One point less than the grand vin. Best after 2008. 3,330 cases made

L de la Louviere is the second wine of Chateau Louviere, an unclassified property in Graves.  Wines from this property are considered a great value. There is a long story of the Chateau and why their wines have long been considered a great value here.

2002 Nizas Little Farm Red

I came across this wine from one of our wholesalers who was overstocked and trying to reduce some inventory.  I didn't have highest hopes but when I saw the high point ratings from Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast review I took a gamble.  After sampling a bottle one night with a couple friends I was pleasantly surprised with this little charmer.  At seven years old, this wine is ready to drink now.  It has great color, an earthy nose, medium to full mouthfeel and very integrated tannins which you can tell have been smoothed out from bottle age.  It would be great for a BBQ or even to drink without food like I usually do.  Normally you would be looking at a  $17.99 price tag but with the discount we are selling for $11.99 a bottle.  Check it out on the corner of our 85 Point Club table at the store.

The polished reviews:

From the wine maker: Le Mas (or little farm) is an original blend mixing Atlantic and Mediterranean influences. The wine reveals a very intense bouquet mixing red fruit, spice and toasted oak aromas. Cabernet and Merlot give their structure and a lingering finish while Syrah brings its delicate fruity aromas and soft tannins.

Wine Spectator: 87 Points Medium-bodied, with blackberry, dark plum and red cherry flavors. Baker's chocolate, mineral and spice fill the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah.

Wine Enthusiast: 89 Points A ripe, smooth wine, dominated by vanilla from wood and by red berry fruits. The tannic structure is subservient to the rich layers of mint and herbal flavors, while the fruit dominates. Finishes with chocolate and firm tannins.

With the warm weather here come check out our "Summah Sippahs" and "BBQ Reds" table and displays near the registers and right when you walk in the front door.   The whites are typically light and crisp and the reds are fruit driven, juicy and can stand up to BBQ food.  You won't find any oaked chardonnay on this table.  Just refreshing, thirst quenching wines to help you enjoy the warm weather.

2004 Tardieu-Laurent Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Speciale 93 Points from Robert Parker, 92 Points from Tanzer. Would have cost $62.99 but we have it for $39.99 The 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Speciale, which is aged in used, small oak casks and comes from the northern sector of Chateauneuf du Pape (specifically a lieux-dit called La Gardiole), is a dense, full-bodied, 100% Grenache cuvee reeking of black cherries and raspberries intermixed with licorice and pepper. Powerful, rich, and set for a long life, it should be given 2-3 years of bottle-age and drunk it over the following 12-15 years

 

 

 

 

 

2004 Clos des Papes Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc - 90 Points from Robert Parker.  Would have cost $85.00 but we have it for $49.99 One of the best white wines of the appellation is made at Clos des Papes, the non-malolactic yet full-bodied and powerful 2004 Clos des Papes Chateauneuf du Pape blanc. Notes of white peaches, pears, citrus oil, and honeysuckle are present in the medium to full-bodied, fleshy 2004. It shows good acidity and a lively, vibrant mouthfeel. Drink it over the next 4-5 years, although some vintages have an amazing ability to last much longer

 

2001 Domaine de Bois Dauphin Chateauneuf du Pape Clos des Pontifes - 92 Points from Robert Parker.  Would have cost $42.99 but we have it for $26.99 (An excellent effort from proprietor Jean Marchand, the modern-styled 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape Clos des Pontifes sees some aging in new oak barrels, but the wood is better integrated in the 2001 than in previous vintages where the oak was too aggressive. The rich, saturated ruby/purple-colored 2001 offers aromas of creme de cassis intermixed with licorice, vanilla, and spice box. Full-bodied, broad, moderately tannic, and concentrated, it will be at its finest between 2006-2014.

2003 Vina Sena Sena from Chile - 93 Points from Robert Parker.  Would have cost $89.99 but we have for $49.99  "In contrast to the 2002, the 2003 Sena is more primary and more complete. It is purple-colored with an expressive array of pain grille, clove, espresso, earth, black currants, and blackberry. This is followed by a wine which admirably combines power and elegance. There are layers of sweet fruit, and the oak, tannin, and acidity are nicely integrated. Cellar this superior effort for another 4-6 years and drink it through 2030"

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

2004 Tardieu-Laurent Cornas Cuvee Coteaux - 90 Points from Robert Parker.  Would have cost $49.99 but we have for $29.99 The 2004 Cornas Coteaux has a deep ruby/purple color and a big, sweet nose of creamy oak and black fruits as well as a hint of flowers. In the mouth, the rustic tannins and sharp acids again recall a lighter weight 1996. This wine needs 2-3 years of cellaring and should drink gracefully for 10-12 years.

Come to our WCL Spring Wine Dinner with Guest Speaker Dave Bove.   We are extremely lucky to have Dave joining us for the evening.  Dave is part owner of a wine import company called Vineyard Brands and has been in the business for over 25 years.  During that time he has become trained as a wine maker in California and has done extensive wine travel around the world.   During the four-course sit down dinner, Dave will be giving presentations along with stories and anecdotes about his travels and about each wine being served.  I have no doubt that it will be a fun and informative evening - well worth the price of admission.

You may have heard that the 2005 vintage from Bordeaux is being hailed as one of the best ever.  We were able to secure a good amount of what we have found to be the best bang for your buck of the vintage. Currently our number one selling wine from Bordeaux, I have two cases of the 2005 Commanderie du Bardelet sitting in my basement. I think it can be drunk now or in five years.  We purchased half of the inventory that our supplier had left in stock.  This wine is more of a new world Bordeaux (approachable at a young age, fruit forward and smooth) but still has plenty of that old world charm.  Right now it's pefectly drinkable, with big tannins balanced by mouth watering acidity and delicious fruit flavor.  And it's because of that tannin and acidity that I think this wine has the potential to age beautifully. 

Though the Commanderie du Bardelet did win one award: "Gold Medal - Medal d'Or, Concours de Grands Vins de France, Mâcon 2006," it sort of fell under the radar with the US critics. Hopefully that's what kept the price down.  The only professional review I was able to find was from a German reviewer named Golo Weber. Here it is (translated by google):

"In glass, this wine shines a ruby red. An extremely delicate bouquet is revealed, despite it's youth it already has an aromatic bounty of cassis, blackberry and plum, with the subtle floral notes and hints of provencial cuisine. Classic Bordeaux from this great vintage, equipped with a powerful body and a strong skeleton, which shows it's potential. After prolonged decanting it's beautiful fruit phase can be enjoyed.  The drinking maturity of a fine wine vinified such as this is probably from 2010 to 2016, WF 97 + / 100 "
